Mississippi State University has a new Photography Concentration
This year PHOTO entered a new era. We are now a new Concentration in
the Department of Art. Once we were under the umbrella of Fine Arts as an
emphasis in the Department of Art. We were one of seven sharing room
under that umbrella. But now we have our own curriculum. Yes – WE OWN OUR
CURRICULUM! Photography now stands independent along side with Graphic Design
and Fine Art. We are a bridge between the commercial and the creative. It has
taken over 25 years to reach this point but this is possible due to you, the
photography student –You, the PH Alumni. Your exhibitions are impressive – your
work is exceptional! YOU ARE PHOTO!
This semester Photo is hosting the Society for Photographic South
Central Regional [SPESC] Conference Oct 25-28th. We are one of eight
regional conferences in the country! https://southcentral.spenational.org/conference/schedule
I hope each Photography student both past and present attends the
SPESC for this is the OUR conference!
For those who are presently students in PHOTO, the conference should
not be missed! MSU Student enrollment forms with a discount just for ART
students are in the Main Art Office. Complete it and return it to me. This is
all PHOTO and you should attend if you are serious about Photography. Become a
SPE student member and submit work to be exhibited in the Colvard Union. Email
me for details. This is for SPE student members only.
I hope each of you becomes a student member of SPE and becomes more
involved with SPE. [ https://www.spenational.org/members/join ] Volunteering
and having SPE membership helps create professional connections that will last
for years. SPE student members can apply for scholarships. MSU PHOTO students have
received these scholarships to attend National and Regional conferences and I
hope we will receive more! But it can’t happen if you are not a member. The
national SPE conference will be in Chicago in March 2013 and I hope that MSU PHOTO will be represented at the National.
This it OUR TIME! We are in control of our destiny. The future is
ours and how the new PHOTO concentration develops is up to YOU!
