Eye Wonder: Photography from the Bank of America Collection February 18, 2011 - May 22, 2011

Hellen van Meene, Untitled, 1999
Color coupler print
15 3/8 x 15 1/8 in.

"By selecting offbeat subjects, shooting intense close-ups, or manipulating focus and color, the artists featured in Eye Wonder have created dreamy and often haunting photographic images. As part of the modern or postmodern eras, these artists have understood that photographs offer only an illusion of reality and that the medium is as subjective a means of expression as other visual art forms, music, or literature. Highlighting photographs created from 1865 to the present, the exhibition displays a rich diversity of subjects and styles that demonstrate the artists’ firm grasp of technique. The works in Eye Wonder depict everything from landscapes, seascapes, and skyscrapers; to artists, writers, and dancers; to vegetables, flowers, and silverware. By applying dynamic techniques, the photographers suggest evocative narratives that may be read in infinite ways.

Drawn from Bank of America’s renowned collection of international photography, Eye Wonder features more than 100 works by a wide array of artists, including Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke-White, Rineke Dijkstra, Gisèle Freund, Candida Höfer, Graciela Iturbide, Dorothea Lange, and Hellen van Meene."

If you are traveling to the DC area over Spring Break - do check this out!! It will be an excellent exhibit. Plus I encourage you to take time to have lunch at the Mezzanine Cafe in the Museum. I did a few years back and it was wonderful.

Mississippi has a State Chapter of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. I encourage you to become a member! This is not limited to women either - It is to support and foster work by women in Mississippi. This is a Great opportunity for networking.

Grace Underwater

This is a sample of an idea that I have to explore the world below the surface level. The fragmented figure seems to be dancing or in play with the light bouncing off the pool's wall.

Shout out to my students!

I am pretty proud of my students Steve Joshlin and Blake McCollum!!

Blake McCollum, whose image is posted above, received an Honorable Mention in the College Single Image category in the 2011 PIEA International Photography Competition. Steven Joshin also was accepted into the exhibit but I do not have an image from him as of yet. As soon as I do I will post it. Steven received 3rd Place in Digitally Constructed category. The judges spent six hours looking at almost 5700 entries and selected 88 individuals for the traveling shows - There will be 2 traveling shows - one through the US and one through Australia.  I am still getting data but I know they competed with students from  India, England, New Zealand, South Africa, Guatemala, Australia and Canada. I am so impressed with these students and all the students who entered the PIEA competition.

Remember you have to enter competitions to get in!! Blake and Steven knew this and did it - you can to.
